Identifying mushrooms by photo: how it works

The mushroom AI estimates from your photos which species it could be and warns about dangerous look-alikes. For good results you need telling pictures: the cap from above, the underside (gills, tubes, ridges or spines), the whole stem including its base and ideally a lengthwise cut.

Most important: an AI – no matter whose – is not a green light to eat. Identifying mushrooms needs all your senses, and even porcini and chanterelles have look-alikes that can be deadly. Use the AI as a learning aid and second opinion – and if in doubt, ask a mushroom expert.

The mushroom AI is available with a free account and shows matching recipes and the species profile for its result.

Frequently asked questions

Can an app identify mushrooms safely?

No. Apps and AI give hints, not a safe identification. The German Mycological Society explicitly advises against identifying edible mushrooms by app alone.

Which photos does the AI need?

Cap from above, underside, the whole stem with its base and ideally a lengthwise cut – sharp and in daylight.

What if I am unsure?

Leave it, or take the whole, uncleaned mushroom to a mushroom expert.
