Mushroom season in Austria

In spring, morels come first, in floodplain forests and under ash trees. From June, chanterelles and birch boletes start, followed in high summer and autumn by porcini, parasol, cauliflower fungus and black trumpets. The higher you are, the later it starts: in the Alps the season often begins weeks after the lowlands and ends with the first frost.

Weather decides whether a season is good: after heavy rain and some warm, humid days, mushrooms often appear one to two weeks later. After heat and drought, the forest stays empty. That is exactly what Waldschatzfinder calculates for your location.

Picking mushrooms in Austria: the rules

  • Federal states have their own rules – for example on picking times or protected species. Check with the state or municipality before your trip.
  • National parks and protected areas – picking is often completely forbidden or restricted there.
  • Only what you know for sure – if in doubt, leave it or ask a mushroom advisor. No app and no AI replaces safe identification.
