Scots pine

Pinus sylvestris

Long needles, always in pairs on a short shoot. High up the trunk the bark is strikingly orange-red and peels thinly, lower down coarse and grey. Small conical cones. A typical tree on sandy soils – home to cauliflower fungus, saffron milkcap and slippery jack.
