🌿 Spring in the forest
Wild garlic: when and where it grows
When the first green carpets appear in floodplain forests in spring, wild garlic season begins. Here you can see when it usually starts near you, where to look – and how to safely tell the poisonous look-alikes apart.
Wild garlic season near you
In Germany usually from mid-March to late April, later in the uplands. Enter your place to see the usual week near you.
Where to find wild garlic
Moist and rich
Floodplain forests, stream banks and damp hollows in broadleaf woods – often under beech and ash, often on lime-rich soil.
In carpets
Where wild garlic grows, it usually covers whole patches. Single plants among other green are a reason to look extra carefully.
Wood anemone as a signal
When the white wood anemones flower, wild garlic season is here too. Both like the same woods.

⚠️ Poisonous look-alikes
Lily of the valley
Poisonous. Does not smell of garlic. Usually two leaves that wrap around a shared stem at the base; the underside is glossy. Wild garlic leaves each grow on their own stalk, with a matt underside.
Autumn crocus
Poisonous. No garlic smell. The leaves have no stalk, grow in a tuft from the ground and wrap around each other at the base – similar to a tulip. It does not flower in spring, which makes it hard to recognise.
Lords-and-ladies
Lords-and-ladies grows in the same habitat and is confused in spring. Very poisonous, including the berries.
Careful with the smell test: The garlic smell stays on your fingers. After the first leaf, every further leaf smells of garlic – even a lily of the valley leaf. So look at every leaf on its own and leave it when in doubt.
What the rules say
- Outside protected areas: a small amount for personal use (the “hand bouquet” rule).
- In nature reserves picking is usually prohibited – watch for the signs.
- Cut only single leaves per plant, never dig up the bulbs – then it grows back next year.
In the same floodplain forests, morel season starts shortly after. Morel season near you → · Mushroom alert for spring →
