A quieter way

Away from the crowds

When the main trail is packed at the weekend: this tour idea prefers quiet, less signposted paths instead of the usual main route – on real hiking trails, not off-trail.

How the idea works

Less official pathsThe route weighs heavily signposted main trails much less than usual.
QuieterPaths away from roads are also preferred, as with the “Quiet walk”.
Still checkedThe usual difficulty limits stay in place – it never leads into open terrain.

To be honest

We do not measure real visitor numbers on trails – we simply do not know them. The idea works with an honest approximation based on path type, not a prediction of how many people are out right now.

Frequently asked questions

How do you know where it is quiet?

Not exactly – we do not measure visitor flows and have no idea where other apps send their users. Instead the idea prefers path type: less heavily marked, official hiking routes and paths away from roads. That often correlates with less traffic, but it is a guess based on the path, not knowledge about people.

Is this the same as the “Quiet walk”?

Related, but not the same. “Quiet walk” mainly avoids road noise. “Away from the crowds” does that too and additionally prefers paths that are less often officially signposted.

Is a less marked path still safe?

The SAC difficulty limits stay in place just like for any other tour – this does not lead into open terrain. Less marked paths can be less well maintained, though; as always, check the weather and path condition before you set off.

Do I need an account?

No. You can plan the tour without signing up. With a free account you can also edit it, save it and take it along as GPX or PDF.
