Mushrooms do not grow by chance. They need warmth, rain and humidity – and the right soil and the right trees. Waldschatzfinder calculates exactly that: it evaluates the weather of the last three months and a 10-day forecast and combines them with soil temperature, soil moisture, elevation, forest type, tree species and pH value at your spot. For over 30 species, from porcini to golden cauliflower fungus.
Whether beginner or old hand: the species map shows where your favourite species finds fitting conditions, the hotspot map where others are successful, and the mushroom AI helps with identification – with a clear eye on poisonous look-alikes. What you find goes into your own blog – and then straight to the kitchen: our recipes are waiting.
Three tips for your next trip
-
Location: Many mushrooms live in symbiosis with trees. Porcini and chanterelles like spruce, beech and oak, the birch bolete needs birches. The Pro forecast knows the tree species around you.
-
Weather: Warm, humid days after heavy rain trigger the big flushes – often one to two weeks later.
-
Soil: Mossy, moist and not too wet is ideal. Elevation counts too: in the mountains the season starts later and ends earlier.
Start with the free basic forecast – and let an account surprise you with soil, forest and trees. Good luck and a rich harvest! Only collect what you know for sure.

Frequently asked questions about mushroom hunting and the mushroom forecast
When is the best time to pick mushrooms?
In central Europe the main season runs from July to November; morels and St George's mushrooms already appear in spring. Weather is decisive: warm, humid spells after heavy rain trigger the flushes. The Waldschatzfinder forecast shows you for your spot and over 30 species when conditions fit.
Where can I find porcini and chanterelles?
Porcini grow in symbiosis with spruce, beech, oak and pine; chanterelles prefer mossy coniferous and mixed forests on acidic soils. The species map shows you for your species where weather, soil, forest type and tree species fit right now.
How does the mushroom forecast work?
Waldschatzfinder evaluates the weather of the last three months and the 10-day forecast (temperature, precipitation, humidity) and adds soil temperature, soil moisture, elevation, forest type, tree species and pH value. This gives every species a growth probability from 0 to 100 percent – a guide, not a promise.
Is Waldschatzfinder free?
Yes. You can use the basic forecast without signing up. With a free account you also get the Pro forecast, species map, mushroom AI, hotspot uploads and your own blog. There is no subscription.
Can I identify mushrooms with my phone?
The mushroom AI gives you hints on the species and on dangerous look-alikes based on photos. It does not replace a mushroom expert: never eat a mushroom just because of an AI identification.
Which mushroom species does the forecast cover?
Over 30 popular edible mushrooms, including porcini, chanterelle, bay bolete, birch bolete, orange birch bolete, parasol, meadow mushroom, morel, cauliflower fungus and wood hedgehog.
Where does the data of the mushroom forecast come from?
Weather data comes from weather services (DWD and Open-Meteo), forest and tree species from Copernicus and DLR, soil pH from ISRIC SoilGrids. These are model and map data, not a measurement at your favourite spot; the site factors of the species are based on mycological experience.
Where do I find mushroom recipes?
In the recipe section, from porcini risotto to chanterelle pan. Search by your mushroom species – and the mushroom AI shows fitting recipes right with its result.
